Where to stay in Cape Town and the Winelands
As I sit here writing in freezing cold temperatures waiting for a glimmer of spring, my thoughts are turning to warmer climes and one of my favourite destinations, South Africa.
I first landed in this incredible country in 2010 and instantly fell in love. For me it has everything; gorgeous scenery, delicious food and great wine. I have managed to get back a couple of times more recently and have stayed in some outstanding properties, the kind of hotels that really elevate a trip. I can honestly recommend any of the following for a truly memorable holiday.
Cape Town area
The Cellars- Hohenort
Located in the Constantia Valley, just 15 minutes drive from Cape Town city centre, The Cellars is a luxurious base within easy reach of Kirstenbosch Gardens and a good selection of restaurants and vineyards. The award winning gardens and multitude of amenities add up to a relaxing stay in the Cape Town area. I particularly enjoyed Constantia and the hotel has a relaxed ambience with good food and service.
The Silo
It’s not hard to see why The Silo was voted the best city hotel in Africa 2020 by Travel + Leisure. This is luxury at its very best and a triumph of art, design and architecture without any hint of pretension. Just minutes from The Waterfront, this hotel caters for your every whim with breathtaking rooms and views for miles. Add in the legendary Royal Portfolio service and this really is a hotel you’ll never forget.
Winelands
Babylonstoren
Within an easy drive from Franschhoek, Babylonstoren will capture your heart from the moment you arrive. The stylish accommodation is scattered throughout the farm and the food is sublime. The gardens are something else and I couldn’t possible divulge the little surprise in store for you at sundown. Outstanding.
Grand Dedale
It was love at first sight at Grand Dedale, nestled at the foot of the Bainskloof Pass and only 5 minutes drive from Wellington. Gorgeous rooms and delicious food set on an exclusive estate, it is the kind of place you never want to leave. Wine tasting next door is a bonus.
7 Koppies
7 Koppies is an exclusive guesthouse set atop a koppie (small hill) just outside Franschhoek. It feels like staying in a private home with amazing views form the pool and a delightful staff on hand. I have to be honest, we had a problem with one of the owners who was less than welcoming which was a shame as I really loved the property and the staff. I’m sure this was a one off and I would still have no problem recommending it.
La Residence
La Residence is a world away from reality, we are talking full on, in your face luxury. Exquisite interiors, beautiful grounds, delicious food combined with wonderful service and all in the heart of Franschhoek. The stuff that dreams are made of. I do think it’s important to balance a stay at La Residence by tuning in to what their foundation projects achieve in the surrounding area.
West Coast
Strandloper Ocean Boutique Hotel
A beautiful boutique hotel located on the west coast, within two hours of Cape Town, in the authentic fishing village of Paternoster. Days are spent relaxing by the pool, walking on the beach or exploring by horseback. A laid back atmosphere, small spa and an excellent restaurant makes for a perfect break.
I also liked the look of Boschendal where we stopped for a bite to eat before the journey home.
