Just back from ... Middleton Lodge Estate
This boutique hotel in North Yorkshire has been on my radar for some time and I have just unpacked my suitcase from a relaxing couple of days on this country estate.
Located in a glorious setting within easy access from the A1 and not far from the picturesque market town of Richmond, the hotel buildings nestle snugly across the 200 acre wooded estate. I can definitely recommend the full body massage (Kiss the Moon) in one of the treatment rooms, a great way to start a relaxing break in the countryside. There is a new spa currently being built as we speak which will be a welcome addition to the property.
The rooms are split into different areas on the estate with the Coach House restaurant being the focal point. We stayed in a Potting Shed room a couple of minutes walk away with lovely views over the orchard and the recently added Shepherd’s Huts. The room was well appointed with the usual luxury amenities. Other features included a freestanding bath, full size Noble Isle toiletries and its own little outside space which I imagine would be a lovely place to enjoy a drink in the summer months.
I loved everything about the Coach House restaurant, both the food and service are first class and the ambience superb. I had to stop myself ordering the white onion soup for a second time, it was so good, my husband had no such reservations. The beef cheek was also delicious. The homemade granola at breakfast is an absolute treat although I was surprised that a full cooked breakfast incurred an extra cost. The continental buffet and selected hot options are included in the rate. You can walk off breakfast on the Woodland Walk and then drive to nearby Richmond in order to explore further afield. We also managed to sneak a peek into the walled garden (between weddings) which is an impressive space providing estate to plate sustainable dishes.
I think it is worth pointing out that this is a countryside hotel where you will have to walk to the restaurant or to enjoy spa treatments so good shoes and a coat are recommended. Umbrellas are provided. It did baffle me that there was no central residents lounge/bar/reception area, it was crying out for somewhere to relax on comfy sofas with a glass of wine in hand, perched in front of a big fire. I also felt it was more of a wedding venue than a hotel; when we arrived there were three weddings taking place and in my opinion our room should have been sold as part of the wedding party. That said, it was an enjoyable couple of days and a lovely place to relax.
